The Specifics

A much-needed resurgence of Hawaiian culture and language has been underway over the past years – and this challenge enlists your help! Full of cultural values, ancient knowledge, and respect for the land, Hawaiian culture is vibrant conveyed through both traditional and modern music.

The Puna Music Festival celebrates Hawaiian music and culture, while uniquely bringing performers and audiences closer together through talk-story, collaboration, and crowdsourcing. Proceeds from the festival support important Hawaiian cultural programs at schools and non-profits throughout the poorest district in the state. Located on the Big Island of Hawai’i, the stunning setting of Puna is where the sun first reaches the Hawaiian Islands, and is a sacred and cherished district in legend and music alike.

The spirit of aloha resonates through the music of the people of Hawai’i, and in this challenge we are looking for ways to celebrate this heritage, a culture which was nearly lost only decades ago. Submit a creative plan of action that would raise awareness and share the cultural wisdom of Hawaiian music and values in your community.

Anyone submitting ideas will receive a special GOOD discount of 50% off any festival package for the Puna Music Festival – showing our deepest appreciation for your kokua.

We will also award a six-night stay in a bamboo eco-cottage for two at Kalani, the Hawaiian retreat center stewarding the festival (valued at $2500), along with a $500 grant to the top-voted idea that furthers Hawaiian music and culture.

Propose your Aloha Mission, and you could win a grant to bring your idea to life. Projects can be implemented within six months of the award date; they do not need to be carried out during the festival.

i would be able to rent space at the cultural center in my town, have my friends that have been to Hawaii display photos & artwork, have my Hawaiian friend speak about culture and tradition, and, believe it or not, there is a local band that plays 3 ukelele which i'd invite to play! ...and this is about 50 miles east of New York City :)
