OPG would like to host a Hawaiian evening in Tbilisi for OPG participants and other young people, to promote music, culture, and how the ocean is important for the people and spirit of Georgia and Hawaii. We will film and promote the evening, and prior to event, skype with children in Hawaii, especially those taking their Duke of Edinburgh/International Award for Young People. We will put together a book from the children here, which I will take with me on my ocean row and give to the children in Hawaii. In January we will launch our OPG International website, an online version of the BBC Oceans project run here, so anyone in the world can use it. We will include Hawaiian music and children's clips and promote this during the ocean row.

We want to hold workshops to introduce children to the ukulele and build-your-own ipu! These two Hawaiian instruments are fun and easy to learn. Kids will leave the workshops being able to play and sing basic Hawaiian songs. Additionally, we will perform with a hula dancer to show how Hawaiian music translates into dance. Funds will be used to purchase ukuleles and materials to build-your-own ipu. Once we have these instruments, we can hold multiple workshops at schools throughout Ventura County and Los Angeles County. We are excited to perform, build ipus, and teach basic ukulele and ipu rhythm to kids. Mahalo!

I would use the $500 to secure a website and set up the technical end (whole or part) to launch this project. I would work with Mana Maoli to oversee the development of this resource and roll it out to various schools and groups. From there, we would work on securing grant funding to build the website/app. This way, students could use the website to help with homework and for general knowledge. Studies show Hawaiian students do so much better in school when they learn through cultural based education. In addition, students learn faster when teaching others, so this would be a double bonus!

We will partner with a local agency to host a free four week ukulele class for youth. The funds will be used to pay for an instructor and purchase up to 14 ukuleles. Participants will be immersed in Hawaiian history and culture, learn to play the ukulele and be confident enough to teach a basic song to a youth or adult. At the conclusion of the class the participants will perform at a community festival celebrating culture and diversity. Participants will teach select volunteers from the Hawaiian song and gift them a ukulele as a reward.

I am a certified yoga teacher & work at a local yoga studio whose owner loves events like this & could easily coordinate the class. We call it "detox-retox" (solyoga.org). I work for a local beer distributor (facebook.com/pages/Wantz-Distributors) who carries Kona Brewery products & we regularly organize "tap takeovers," where a restaurant will carry all of only one brewery's products for one night-- and I have a close relationship with a local live music venue/bar/restaurant (cafe-nola.com) who would love to support a cause such as this & has excellent musician contacts. The grant would offset the cost of advertising, beer and hiring musicians. Ticket costs & a % of profits from the night could be donated to the festival's non-profits.

Our theme is “Keeping the Culture Alive.” We are proud to showcase the best parts of Kaua’i – our people, culture and beauty. By shining the spotlight on the people in our community who are “Keeping the Culture Alive” we also have the opportunity to give our visitors a unique, authentic, hands-on experience they’ll always remember, in a one of a kind setting. This event, May 26, 2012, is presented by the Hanalei Hawaiian Civic Club and is sponsored by HTA and the County of Kaua'i. Our budget exceeds our grant amount so any extra support will allow us to continue to keep May Day by the Bay a viable vehicle to increase awareness of Hawaiian music and culture in our community.

Spam Musubi and Music are great ways to share unique flavors of the Hawaiian Islands. $500 dollars would go towards helping us pay for a band to play at the event as well as advertising leading up to the event. Additional resources will be needed to procure food to make the Spam Musubi. We plan on holding the event at Wood Park in Hudson MA. The proposed route would loop around a portion the Assabet River into downtown Hudson and complete back at the park where a grandstand awaits playing local Hawaiian music.

The event would take place either during an assembly or after-school event and would feature Hawaiian foods, pictures, guest speakers, and, of course, music. The $500 dollars would be put towards the food, decorations, and procuring or making CDs, consisting of the music featured at the the event, for the children to take home with them.

We'd host an interactive show in a densely populated area on campus where we'd teach people how to play the music themselves by calling them onstage or accepting volunteers. We'd use the funds to purchase the leis and Hawaiian shirts to hand out! That's the best part - it's cheap, fun, and every lei and shirt we give out will serve as a lasting reminder to those who participated and saw our show.

The funds would be to cover the expenses at the National Mall, such as setting up a stage, ordering flyers and signs, putting up signs, advertising on the metro, renting of audio equipment, and finally, cleaning up the Mall's damaged grass after the event. I would hope NPR, Cobert Report and Jon Stewart would wave any charges due to the nature of the event -- to increase awareness of Hawaiian music and values. Hopefully T-shirts and other event-related gifts could be sold at the event. Any remaining funds would be donated to Pacific Music Foundation - http://www.pmfhawaii.com/. At the Mall players would try to break the record for the largest ukelele ensemble like these events: http://goo.gl/rHbQ1.

Hawaiian music often brings busy ohana together. Music is a wonderful medium that can inspire and help mind and body function for the elderly, irregardless of how mobile or cognizant someone is. This month will be a great excuse to bring the keiki and friends over to visit and enjoy great Hawaiian music with the family. Musical volunteers will go around different retirement communities each weekend for one month. The retirement communities will invite its residents, community, family and friends to join the festivities and fun for 2 hours. Afterwards, snacks and beverages will be served. If the community wants and budget allows a small luau or potluck as well.
