The Idea

By integrating Hawaiian dance, music, and chant into the regular curriculum, kama'aina founder of Amani Art Club, Angela Crandall, will share the aloha spirit with rehabilitated street kids from an urban slum in Kenya, Africa. 1 out of the club's 4 monthly classes will focus on Hawaiian culture.

The Specifics

Amani Art Club, a youth outreach program in an urban slum of Nairobi, Kenya, aims to make learning fun and interactive by integrating music and art with lessons in geography, world culture, history, and literature. The co-founder, a kama’aina from Honolulu, moved to Africa in 2010 and founded the Amani Art Club. Crandall is the two-time recipient of the Hawaii People’s Choice Award (2008; 2011) and has been singing Hawaiian jazz since 1990. Her experience includes leading the Hawaii Club at Georgetown University where she advocated Hawaiian culture across the East Coast. Integrating Hawaiian dance, music, and chant into the Amani Club curriculum to expose African students to the wisdom of modern and traditional Hawaiian music.

I am also an Amani Art Club volunteer. Angela's work with the Amani Art Club youth is absolutely amazing. One of my favorite moments was seeing one of the quietest boys in the classroom raise his hand to answer a difficult question about geography. It is extremely apparent that Amani Art Club has had a positive impact on the youth, and that they look forward to Amani Art Club sessions. I also enjoyed learning traditional Kenyan music from the youth - Angela definitely encourages personal expression and cultural sharing. I hope you'll join me in voting for Amani Art Club!

I helped Angela initiate Amani Art Club and have witnessed the positive impact this program has had. Angela and her volunteers have opened up a safe space for these talented boys to learn, discuss and create- introducing them each week to new ideas and cultures. Please support Amani Art Club!

This is an exceptional program, run by an exceptional group of people for a really exceptional group of kids. Angela and her colleagues are diligently changing these kids' lives and opening up their world to new possibilities, one Saturday art project at a time. I hope you can take the time to learn more and support this.

I have volunteered as a guest teacher with Amani Art Club, and have seen the impact it has made in the lives of its students. Art Club gives these youth an outlet for their creativity, and allows them to absorb information while in a relaxed and wholesome setting. I cannot say enough about the positive impact Ms. Crandall is making with this group, and strongly encourage support of this initiative. She is deeply in touch with her Hawaiian roots and brings a touch of Hawaiian music, culture, and spirit with her to every class. It will be fantastic to see the things she and her team can do with this grant and the positive impact of increased exposure to Hawaiian culture on the students.
